20-Year Sentence Sought for Celsius Founder Alex Mashinsky

Alex Mashinsky

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is recommending a 20-year prison sentence for Alex Mashinsky, the founder of the collapsed cryptocurrency platform Celsius Network. This harsh penalty reflects the severity of the alleged fraud, which resulted in billions of dollars in losses for Celsius customers.

In a scathing 97-page sentencing memorandum filed on April 28, the DOJ detailed Mashinsky’s fraudulent actions. The document highlights the approximately $4.7 billion in crypto assets rendered inaccessible to users following the platform’s suspension of withdrawals in June 2022. The DOJ’s statement is unequivocal: “The Court should sentence Alexander Mashinsky to twenty years’ imprisonment as just punishment for his years-long campaign of lies and self-dealing.”

Mashinsky’s guilty plea, entered in December 2024, admitted to orchestrating the criminal activity at Celsius, resulting in over $550 million in losses and personally enriching him by more than $48 million. The DOJ emphasizes that Mashinsky’s actions were not the result of negligence, but rather deliberate, calculated decisions driven by greed.
