Arizona Governor Vetoes Bitcoin Reserve Bill: Bitcoin Community Responds

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs’ veto of a bill allowing the state to hold Bitcoin in reserve has sparked outrage among Bitcoin supporters and some government officials. The Arizona Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Act, which would have permitted the state to invest seized funds into Bitcoin, was met with swift criticism following the veto.
Jameson Lopp, Casa co-founder, commented on X, stating, “This will age poorly.” Anthony Pompliano, a prominent Bitcoin entrepreneur, added, “Imagine the ignorance of a politician to believe they can make investment decisions better than Bitcoin.” He further suggested that if Governor Hobbs can’t outperform Bitcoin, she should invest in it.
Bitcoin’s Future and Governmental Understanding
Crypto lawyer Andrew Gordon highlighted a need for more elected officials who comprehend Bitcoin’s significance. Wendy Rogers, a co-sponsor of the bill, expressed her disappointment, stating, “Politicians don’t understand that Bitcoin doesn’t need Arizona. Arizona needs Bitcoin.” She intends to refile the bill. The bill’s failure is seen as a missed opportunity by many in the Bitcoin community, especially given that Arizona’s state retirement system already holds stocks of Michael Saylor’s Strategy (MSTR), essentially a leveraged Bitcoin ETF. April’s 32% surge in MSTR stock price further fuels arguments in favor of Bitcoin.
Governor Hobbs justified her veto, citing the strength of Arizona’s existing retirement system and its current investment strategies. However, this stance has been met with considerable pushback from the cryptocurrency community.
Peter Schiff, a well-known crypto skeptic, supported the veto, arguing against government speculation in cryptocurrencies using public funds. The bill’s failure in Arizona follows similar setbacks in Oklahoma, Montana, South Dakota, and Wyoming, illustrating the challenges faced in integrating Bitcoin into state-level finances across the US.
