Bitcoin ETF Bloodbath: $680 Million Exodus Shakes Crypto Market

The cryptocurrency market experienced a significant jolt this week as investors pulled a record $680 million from Bitcoin ETFs on Thursday – the largest single-day outflow since their January approval. This mass exodus, coinciding with a reassessment of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate cut projections for 2025, sent shockwaves through the crypto world.

A Perfect Storm: Fed Projections and ETF Outflows

The Fed’s revised economic projections, revealing only two anticipated quarter-point rate cuts next year (down from four), fueled a broader sell-off in risk assets. Bitcoin ETFs, including prominent players like Grayscale and Bitwise, bore the brunt of this, suffering approximately 8% declines. This mirrored Bitcoin’s own roughly 9% drop during the same period.

The outflow shattered a 15-day streak of inflows for US Bitcoin ETFs, totaling a net inflow of approximately $5.3 billion before this dramatic reversal. Bitcoin, after reaching a high of over $108,000 earlier in the week, tumbled below the $100,000 mark, briefly dipping to $92,000 before recovering slightly to around $97,400.

Analyst Perspectives: A Cautious Outlook

Experts attribute this bearish trend to a combination of factors: the Fed’s cautious stance, seasonal profit-taking among institutional investors, and significant liquidations exceeding $240 million in a single day, affecting both long and short positions.

Joseph Dahrieh, managing principal at Tickmill, warned, \”This decline could heavily impact cryptocurrency and broader market sentiment, especially with Bitcoin below $100,000, suggesting potential short-term volatility and downside risks.\”

Antonio Di Giacomo, a senior market analyst at XS.com, added, \”The Federal Reserve’s cautious signal regarding fewer rate cuts in 2025 created an atmosphere of uncertainty and speculation.\”

Alex Kuptsikevich, chief market analyst at FxPro, further cautioned that the total cryptocurrency market capitalization could fall below $3 trillion (from a recent peak of $3.7 trillion), predicting that a drop below $94,500 for Bitcoin would signify a break in the six-week uptrend. A fall below $92,000, he warned, would push Bitcoin below its 50-day moving average, potentially favoring bears.

The Road Ahead: Uncertainty Remains

While Bitcoin has stabilized above $97,400 as of the week’s close, the market remains volatile. The significant outflow from Bitcoin ETFs underscores the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the cryptocurrency market and its sensitivity to macroeconomic factors.
