Bitcoin’s Decade-Long Rise: Could it Outshine Gold as an Inflation Hedge?

Blockstream CEO Adam Back’s bold prediction: Bitcoin could surpass gold as the premier inflation hedge within the next ten years. This assertion, made during a Paris Blockchain Week 2025 fireside chat with Cointelegraph’s Gareth Jenkinson, is fueled by escalating global inflation and monetary instability.

Back highlights Bitcoin’s inherent scarcity, akin to gold, and its growing acceptance as a store of value, despite a recent market correction. He emphasizes that Bitcoin’s ongoing adoption curve gives it a significant advantage.

\”Bitcoin has the advantage of being like gold – it’s a scarce asset but also undergoing an adoption curve,\” Back stated. He pointed to the significant increase in the money supply of major currencies like the US dollar and the euro over the past five years as a catalyst for Bitcoin adoption.

\”Eventually, that money is used to buy all the goods. So eventually, they will go up by that much, particularly hard assets like housing, anything physical long term,\” Back explained. \”The inflation rate is probably 10% or 15% for the next decade, an investment return that is very hard to get with stocks or housing rentals.\”

\”So there’s a real prospect of Bitcoin competing with gold and then starting to take some of the gold use cases, like as a geopolitical hedge, take some of that money into Bitcoin.\”

While the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland projects a lower 10-year inflation average, alternative data suggests a potential surge in inflation over the next five years. Consumer inflation expectations have climbed, underscoring economic concerns.

The approval of US-based spot Bitcoin ETFs and a more crypto-friendly US administration are additional factors contributing to Bitcoin’s potential rise. Back believes private investor adoption is crucial before significant institutional or governmental involvement.

\”I prefer that those people buy Bitcoin ahead of governments because as soon as governments buy, it’s probably going to create a wave of other governments competing with them.\”

President Trump’s executive order establishing a Bitcoin reserve further strengthens this narrative. This move signals a significant step toward mainstream financial system integration.
