BitGo Secures EU-Wide MiCA License: A Milestone for Crypto Custody

BitGo MiCA License

In a significant development for the European cryptocurrency landscape, Goldman Sachs-backed BitGo has officially received its Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) license from Germany’s BaFin. This approval grants BitGo Europe the authorization to provide digital asset services across the entire European Union.

This landmark achievement follows BitGo’s establishment of its EU headquarters in Frankfurt in 2023 and subsequent registrations in various EU member states, including Italy, Spain, Poland, and Greece. The MiCA license signifies a crucial step towards providing a unified regulatory framework for BitGo’s operations, allowing seamless service provision to both traditional finance institutions and crypto-native companies.

Expanding Institutional-Grade Services

BitGo’s managing director, Harald Patt, highlighted the company’s commitment to security, transparency, and trust. The firm plans to leverage this license to expand its range of institutional-grade digital asset solutions within the EU, though specifics on immediate service rollouts remain undisclosed. This expansion signifies BitGo’s ambition to cater to a broader spectrum of clients across the European financial market.

A Key Development for European Crypto Regulation

Germany’s BaFin has been at the forefront of issuing MiCA licenses, indicating its position as a key hub for crypto firms seeking regulatory compliance within the EU. BitGo joins a growing list of companies, such as Bitpanda and Boerse Stuttgart Digital Custody, that have already secured similar approvals. This wave of MiCA licenses underscores the evolving regulatory landscape in Europe and the increasing maturity of the crypto industry within the region.
