Coinbase Data Breach Under DOJ Investigation: A Deeper Dive

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is reportedly investigating allegations of bribery involving Coinbase’s outsourced customer service agents in India. These agents allegedly provided user data to criminals in exchange for financial compensation.

Bloomberg reported on May 19th that the DOJ’s probe centers around a data breach disclosed by Coinbase on May 15th. The exchange confirmed that terminated contractors misused their access to internal systems, resulting in the theft of account data for a limited number of customers.
