Coinbase Institutional Launches XRP Futures Trading

Coinbase Institutional, the arm of Coinbase catering to institutional investors, has officially filed with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for the listing of XRP futures contracts. This move marks a significant step for regulated XRP trading in the US and is anticipated to bolster the asset’s liquidity and accessibility within the institutional investment landscape.

In a recent announcement, Coinbase Institutional expressed enthusiasm about the prospect, highlighting the regulated and capital-efficient exposure the new futures contracts will offer to one of the most liquid crypto assets. The launch is expected on April 21st.

The CFTC filing details the characteristics of the XRP futures contract, identified by the symbol XRL. These contracts will be cash-settled monthly and margined, reflecting the price of XRP and settled in US dollars. Each contract represents 10,000 XRP.

Trading will initially encompass the current month and the following two months. A crucial safety mechanism includes a trading pause triggered by spot XRP price fluctuations exceeding 10% within an hour.

Coinbase emphasizes that extensive consultations with Futures Commission Merchants (FCMs) and market participants have supported the decision, indicating strong market anticipation for the launch. While Coinbase is not the first to offer XRP futures in the U.S., its entry is significant given its prominent position in the crypto exchange market.

The move comes amidst a backdrop of fluctuating XRP sentiment. Recent reports show negative funding rates on major derivatives exchanges, suggesting a bearish outlook among some derivatives traders. However, Coinbase’s initiative to introduce regulated XRP futures is a sign that interest in the asset persists at the institutional level.
