Berkshire’s Cash Reserves: A Bitcoin Giant?

Berkshire Hathaway concluded Q4 2024 with a staggering $347 billion in cash and US Treasury bills. This massive liquidity provides the company with the potential to acquire a significant amount of Bitcoin. At May’s approximate price of $95,000 per Bitcoin, Berkshire could theoretically purchase approximately 3.52 million BTC, representing about 18% of the total circulating supply.

Even if the company only utilized its US Treasury holdings, estimated at $295.98 billion, the potential Bitcoin acquisition would still be substantial, amounting to approximately 3.12 million BTC.

Such a purchase would dwarf the holdings of MicroStrategy, currently the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin holder. In essence, Berkshire Hathaway could theoretically match MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin stash using a fraction of its immense cash reserves.

Abel’s Stance: A Shift in Strategy?

While Berkshire Hathaway’s financial capacity to acquire Bitcoin is undeniable, the company’s future strategy under Greg Abel remains uncertain. Abel hasn’t signaled any deviation from Buffett’s traditional value investing approach, which historically viewed Bitcoin skeptically.

Bitcoin’s price appreciation since Buffett’s criticism in 2018 is noteworthy. However, Berkshire’s existing indirect exposure to the cryptocurrency sector through its investments in crypto-friendly companies hints at a potential evolution of its investment strategy.
