Crypto Market Meltdown: $1.6 Billion in Liquidations as XRP, DOGE Plunge

The cryptocurrency market experienced a significant shockwave today, with over $1.6 billion in liquidations across derivatives markets. This dramatic event follows a double-digit percentage drop in the price of prominent altcoins like XRP and Dogecoin. Data from CoinGlass reveals the staggering scale of the liquidations. A total of $1.56 billion in cryptocurrency contracts were forcibly closed, with long positions accounting for a substantial $1.39 billion (nearly 90%). This indicates a significant number of traders betting on rising prices were caught off guard.

Asset Liquidation Value (USD)
Ethereum $229M
Bitcoin $173M
Dogecoin $88M
XRP $68M
Other $496M

While Bitcoin managed to limit losses to around 2%, the altcoin market suffered significantly. The heavy losses in XRP and Dogecoin, down over 10%, contributed substantially to the overall liquidation figures. Experts suggest that the recent surge in Bitcoin’s price may have fueled overly optimistic bullish positions, which were brutally liquidated as the market corrected. The heatmap below illustrates the distribution of liquidations across various crypto assets. The significant sum lost in the “Other” category, representing smaller-cap altcoins, underscores the widespread nature of the market downturn. This points to a considerable amount of speculative activity in the sector. Although mass liquidations are not uncommon in the volatile crypto market, the scale of today’s event is noteworthy. The confluence of high volatility and leveraged trading positions created a perfect storm for such a substantial market correction. At the time of writing, XRP is trading around $2.09, down approximately 15% over the past week.
