Crypto Market Shakes After Musk-Trump Twitter War: $1 Billion in Liquidations

The cryptocurrency market experienced significant turbulence following a public spat between Elon Musk and Donald Trump, resulting in nearly $1 billion in liquidations within 24 hours. Bitcoin, while showing initial volatility, ultimately saw a less dramatic loss than other cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin’s Rollercoaster Ride

Bitcoin’s price fluctuated wildly, initially dipping from around $105,800 to $100,400 before recovering to approximately $104,100. While still slightly down for the day, the overall loss remained under 2%. However, other cryptocurrencies fared worse, with Ethereum down almost 6% and Dogecoin experiencing a drop of about 7%.

The Trump-Musk Twitter Feud

The market’s volatility coincided with a heated exchange between former President Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk on social media. The conflict stemmed from Musk’s criticism of a proposed bill, leading to a public back-and-forth that sent ripples throughout the financial world.

Massive Liquidations Hit Crypto Market

The resulting market uncertainty triggered substantial liquidations, totaling approximately $970 million according to CoinGlass data. Long positions accounted for a significant portion of these losses, representing 88% of the total. Bitcoin and Ethereum bore the brunt of the liquidations, contributing $346 million and $286 million, respectively.

Analyzing the ‘Long Squeeze’

The dominance of long liquidations suggests a potential “long squeeze,” where leveraged long positions are forcefully closed due to price declines. This event highlights the inherent risks of leveraged trading in the volatile cryptocurrency market.

Conclusion

The recent crypto market downturn emphasizes the interconnectedness of geopolitical events and social media influence on cryptocurrency prices. The volatility underscores the importance of risk management for investors in this dynamic space.
