Crypto Relief: House Reverses Course, Advances Key Digital Asset Bills
A dramatic turnaround in the US House of Representatives has breathed new life into crucial crypto legislation. After a narrow defeat on Tuesday, a motion to reconsider three key digital asset bills – the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins (GENIUS) Act, the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act of 2025, and an anti-CBDC bill – passed on Wednesday. This victory came after President Trump’s direct intervention with key Republican representatives.
The initial vote saw 13 Republicans joining Democrats to block the legislation. However, following a late-night meeting with the President, a subsequent vote saw all Republicans supporting the motion to reconsider, resulting in a 215-211 victory. Representative Andy Harris confirmed this shift, emphasizing the House Freedom Caucus’s support following the agreement with President Trump.
Challenges Remain: A Potential Legislative Merger
Despite this crucial step forward, new hurdles have emerged. Reports suggest House leadership is considering merging the market structure and anti-CBDC bills, a move met with resistance from some Republicans within the House Financial Services and Agriculture Committees. Concerns are that such a merger could jeopardize the passage of the CLARITY Act, potentially causing it to lose support from Democrats due to the anti-CBDC provisions.
A Senate GOP staffer expressed hope that the House can advance some form of crypto legislation to avoid further setbacks. Meanwhile, the GENIUS Act remains a standalone bill, having already cleared the Senate.
Market Reaction
The crypto market, which experienced a dip following the initial legislative setbacks, has shown signs of recovery. Bitcoin is currently holding above $119,000. The outcome of the next procedural vote will be pivotal for the future of cryptocurrency regulation in the US.
