Crypto VC Funding Soars Despite Deal Decline in Q1 2025
Despite a significant drop in the number of deals, the first quarter of 2025 witnessed a remarkable surge in crypto venture capital funding, according to a recent PitchBook report. This unexpected trend reveals a shift in investment strategies within the crypto space.
The report, released on May 14th, highlights a 39.5% decrease in deal volume compared to Q1 2024, with 405 deals concluded this year versus 670 last year. However, the total funding amount more than doubled, reaching $6 billion compared to $2.6 billion in Q1 2024 and $3 billion in Q4 2024. This dramatic increase suggests investors are focusing on larger, more promising ventures.
PitchBook’s senior crypto research analyst, Robert Le, attributes this phenomenon to the continued appeal of crypto’s core utility, even amid macroeconomic uncertainty. He notes that substantial investments poured into specific sectors, underscoring strategic focus rather than broad-based participation.
Crypto asset managers, exchanges, and financial services received the lion’s share of the funding, attracting nearly $2.55 billion across just 16 deals. This strategic concentration suggests investors are prioritizing established players and proven business models.
Looking forward, the anticipated Circle IPO is poised to be a pivotal event, potentially influencing future valuations and attracting significant late-stage capital. The outcome could significantly impact investment strategies in the payments and infrastructure sector.

The growth of stablecoins, reaching $227.1 billion in market value, further underscores their importance as a stable foundation for crypto transactions. This stability contrasts sharply with the fluctuating values of other cryptocurrencies, suggesting a sustained demand for dollar-denominated settlements.
Despite the significant Bybit exploit, which highlighted vulnerabilities in the crypto ecosystem, experts predict an increased demand for robust security measures, impacting future investments. Startups focused on improved security and custody solutions are likely to attract significant funding.
