DeFi Security Improves While CeFi Losses Explode in 2024: Hacken Report

A new report from blockchain security firm Hacken reveals a dramatic divergence in the cryptocurrency security landscape in 2024. While decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols experienced a significant drop in exploits, centralized finance (CeFi) platforms suffered a staggering increase in losses from security breaches.

Hacken’s annual \”Web3 Security Report\” details a total of $2.91 billion in losses stemming from security failures throughout the year. A key finding highlights the contrasting fortunes of DeFi and CeFi. DeFi protocols saw a 40% decrease in losses, falling from $787 million in 2023 to $474 million in 2024. This improvement is largely attributed to the wider adoption of robust security measures such as zero-knowledge cryptography and multi-party computation.

The decline in cross-chain bridge hacks played a crucial role in this positive trend for DeFi. Losses from these attacks plummeted from a staggering $1.89 billion in 2022, to $338 million in 2023, and finally to $114 million in 2024.

In stark contrast, CeFi platforms, including cryptocurrency exchanges, experienced a more than doubling of losses, rising from $339 million in 2023 to a concerning $694 million in 2024. This represents almost one-third of all crypto-related incidents in 2024, underlining the persistent vulnerabilities within centralized systems.

Gaming and metaverse projects emerged as another significant target, accounting for nearly 20% of all hacks, with total losses reaching $389 million. The PlayDapp exploit in Q1 2024, resulting in a massive $290 million loss, stands out as the year’s largest incident in this sector.

Phishing scams continued to pose a substantial threat, causing over $600 million in losses. These scams demonstrate increasingly sophisticated social engineering techniques, including a notable $129 million address poisoning attack in November. This attack highlights the manipulative tactics employed by scammers to deceive users into transferring funds to fraudulent addresses.

The explosive popularity of memecoins in 2024, particularly on Solana, wasn’t without its pitfalls. Many projects preyed on investors through presale scams and celebrity-endorsed rug pulls. The Hawk Tuah memecoin, launched by influencer Hailey Welch, serves as a cautionary tale, with its value collapsing by 95% shortly after launch.

The report emphasizes the urgent need for increased investor education, especially when dealing with high-risk, speculative assets like memecoins. As of press time, Bitcoin (BTC) is trading at $98,921, up 5.8% in the last 24 hours.
