Diversified Energy’s Abandoned Pennsylvania Crypto Mining Site: Environmental Concerns and Regulatory Violations
Diversified Energy, a cryptocurrency mining company, has left behind a legacy of environmental concerns and regulatory violations at its former natural gas-powered crypto mining site in Elk County, Pennsylvania. The Longhorn Pad A site, revived in 2022 after years of dormancy, operated without the necessary air quality permit from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
Despite obtaining the permit in December 2023, a March 2025 inspection revealed the mining operation’s complete abandonment. The DEP discovered missing equipment, unplugged wells, and issued a violation notice. Diversified, however, maintains it may restart gas production at the site, contradicting the DEP’s assessment and environmental advocates’ concerns.
This incident highlights a larger issue involving Diversified’s business model. The company acquires aging wells, extracts remaining value, and faces criticism for inadequate decommissioning plans. A 2022 report dubbed this a “business model built to fail Appalachia,” raising concerns about potential taxpayer costs for thousands of unplugged wells. The company recently agreed to plug 3,000 wells by 2034 as part of a legal settlement but remains under regulatory scrutiny, including an investigation by the US House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
Local officials, unaware of the site’s abandonment, express frustration. PJ Piccirillo, a local supervisor, stated that equipment was removed without notice. The incident underscores the broader scrutiny faced by cryptocurrency mining operations across the US, facing increasing pushback from communities and regulatory bodies.
