Elon Musk’s Departure from Government Efficiency Role: An Uphill Battle
Elon Musk’s time as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a position he described as an “uphill battle,” has officially ended. His departure, effective May 30th, concludes his 130-day term as a Special Government Employee.
Musk confirmed his exit via a social media post, expressing gratitude to President Trump for the opportunity. A White House official confirmed the news to Reuters.
In interviews, Musk cited the challenges of navigating the federal bureaucracy, and criticized a recent multi-trillion-dollar tax break package, arguing it would counteract DOGE’s cost-cutting efforts. The Department claims significant cost savings, though these figures are heavily contested by numerous media outlets.
Despite the controversy and legal challenges facing DOGE, Musk expressed optimism for the organization’s future.
A lawsuit, filed by multiple states, is moving forward, alleging that DOGE and Musk illegally exerted power over government operations. The suit claims they unlawfully accessed government data, terminated employees, and cancelled contracts.
Musk’s Time in Politics and Tesla’s Performance
In a recent interview, Musk admitted to spending “a bit too much time” on political endeavors, a factor which some critics have linked to Tesla’s recent financial performance. He clarified that his time allocation was perhaps too heavily focused on government matters, and has since adjusted his priorities.
Tesla’s share prices saw a positive reaction to the news of Musk decreasing his involvement with DOGE. However, Tesla still faces challenges, with considerable sales declines reported earlier this year.
Despite the dip, Tesla still retains a significant Bitcoin holding valued at approximately $1.24 billion. These market fluctuations place Tesla alongside other Big Tech companies navigating similar headwinds in 2025.
