Ethereum Gas Limit to Increase 100x? A 4-Year Proposal
A groundbreaking Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP-9698) suggests a dramatic 100-fold increase in the Ethereum mainnet’s gas limit over the next four years. This ambitious plan, proposed by Ethereum Foundation researcher Dankrad Feist, aims to significantly boost transaction speeds on the Ethereum network.
Feist’s proposal outlines a phased approach, gradually increasing the gas limit by a factor of 10 roughly every two years. The initial increase would begin around June 1st, 2025, at epoch 369017. The final tenfold increase would occur approximately two years later.
This careful escalation, while ambitious, is designed to allow ample time for Ethereum clients to adapt. The predicted outcome? A potential surge in transactions per second (TPS), from the current average of approximately 20 to a staggering 2,000. This level of scalability would bring Ethereum closer to competing with other high-throughput blockchains like Solana.
This EIP, if approved by Ethereum clients, would change the existing gas limit from 36 million to a whopping 3.6 billion. While potentially stressing some nodes initially, Feist argues the gradual implementation minimizes disruption and provides sufficient time for optimization.
This proposal isn’t occurring in a vacuum. It follows a recent increase to the gas limit to 36 million from 30 million and a prior doubling in August 2021. Further, this proposal counters criticism that Ethereum’s focus on Layer-2 scaling solutions has created fragmentation within the ecosystem.
Concurrent efforts like EIP-9678 are actively exploring a fourfold increase in the gas limit, planned for implementation in the Fusaka hard fork, tentatively scheduled for late 2025. With the Pectra upgrade coming in May, the Ethereum ecosystem is clearly prioritizing improved scalability at the base layer.
