Hut 8’s Q1 2025: 79% Hashrate Growth Despite $134M Loss

Bitcoin miner Hut 8 grows hashrate 79% despite $134M quarterly loss

Despite reporting a significant net loss, Hut 8, a prominent cryptocurrency mining firm, achieved a remarkable 79% increase in its hashrate during the first quarter of 2025. This impressive growth, detailed in their quarterly report released on May 8th, comes alongside a net loss of $134.3 million against revenues of $21.8 million.

CEO Asher Genoot attributed the substantial loss to strategic, large-scale investments. He stated, “The first quarter represented a deliberate investment phase, and we anticipate seeing increasingly clear returns in upcoming quarters.”

As of March 31st, Hut 8’s operational energy capacity reached 1,020 megawatts – sufficient to power over 800,000 average US homes. The company also holds rights to expand its operations by an additional 2,600 MW.

Strategic Investments and American Bitcoin

Genoot highlighted that the financial results directly reflect Hut 8’s significant investments, including ASIC fleet upgrades and the launch of American Bitcoin, a majority-owned subsidiary. Announced in late March, American Bitcoin, which includes members of the Trump family as partners, aims to become a global leader in Bitcoin mining, building a substantial Bitcoin reserve. Early April reports indicated American Bitcoin’s plans for further capital acquisition, potentially through an IPO. Genoot emphasized that American Bitcoin’s launch streamlines capital allocation, enabling Hut 8 to scale cost-effective ventures like high-performance computing.

Future Growth and Expansion

Hut 8’s 2025 expansion plans are progressing, including the activation of the Vega data center, initial groundwork at the River Bend data center, and the development of a utility-scale power portfolio. Genoot expressed confidence that these initiatives will accelerate near-term cash flow generation while solidifying Hut 8’s position in next-generation digital infrastructure markets.

Currently trading at $12.66 (a 2.2% daily increase on Nasdaq), Hut 8’s stock is down over 38% from its year-start price of $20.49. This contrasts with Core Scientific’s Q1 results, which showed a net profit of $580 million despite missing revenue estimates.
