KuCoin’s CEO Announces Plans for South Korea Re-entry

KuCoin CEO on South Korea Re-entry

Following a regulatory crackdown that saw its platform blocked in South Korea, cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has revealed plans to return to the market. The announcement was made by KuCoin’s newly appointed CEO, BC Wong, in an exclusive interview.

In March and April 2024, South Korean regulators took action against numerous unregistered crypto exchanges, ordering app stores to remove them. KuCoin was among those affected. However, the exchange hasn’t given up on the South Korean market.

Wong emphasized a phased approach to re-entering South Korea, prioritizing compliance in major jurisdictions such as the US, EU, China, and India first. He confirmed that KuCoin is actively engaging with regulators to achieve the necessary compliance.

Navigating the Global Regulatory Maze

Wong highlighted the increasing stringency of regulations in the crypto space, suggesting a potential motive to limit the influence of global players in favor of domestic exchanges. He noted that the current regulatory landscape differs significantly from three years ago.

Oliver Stauber, KuCoin’s EU CEO, added insights into the challenges of operating within the EU, even with the implementation of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). While MiCA offers a passporting feature for licenses, inconsistencies in interpretation across different EU jurisdictions create obstacles for seamless operation.

Stauber pointed out instances where licenses were deemed “wrongly assessed,” creating complications for exchange operations. He emphasized the need for consistent regulatory enforcement to establish a truly level playing field within the European crypto market.
