Luxury Lifestyles Fueled by $263M Crypto Heist: 12 More Indicted
Twelve additional individuals face charges in connection with a massive $263 million cryptocurrency theft, adding to the initial indictment of Malone Lam. This sophisticated operation, involving 4,100 Bitcoin stolen from a Genesis creditor, highlights the evolving tactics of cybercriminals.
The superseding indictment unveils a complex scheme spanning hacking, social engineering, and brazen burglaries targeting cryptocurrency hardware wallets. The indictment alleges that members of this group, with aliases like “Goth Ferrrari” and “The Accountant,” engaged in a “cyber-enabled racketeering conspiracy” from October 2023.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) reports that several defendants have been apprehended, while others are believed to be residing in Dubai. Many of the suspects are young adults from California. Their alleged activities included:
- Hacking databases to obtain cryptocurrency holder information.
- Conducting social engineering attacks through cold calls.
- Burglarizing homes to steal crypto hardware wallets.
- Using sophisticated money laundering techniques, including peel chains and crypto mixers, to obscure the flow of stolen funds.
The DOJ states that Lam, the main defendant, also allegedly hacked into a victim’s iCloud account to track their movements, facilitating burglaries committed by accomplice Marlon Ferro.
Lavish Spending Spree
The indictment alleges that the stolen funds, exceeding $230 million from a single incident alone, were used to finance an extravagant lifestyle. The suspects reportedly spent lavishly on nightclubs (up to $500,000 per night!), 28 exotic cars costing as much as $3.8 million, and luxury goods.
Furthermore, the group allegedly rented homes and jets using fraudulent identities. The defendants face charges under the RICO Act, along with wire fraud and money laundering offenses. This case serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of crypto crimes and the ongoing efforts to combat them.
