Public Companies Drive Bitcoin’s Exchange Exodus: Fidelity’s Insights

A significant drop in Bitcoin reserves held on cryptocurrency exchanges has been observed, reaching a six-year low. According to Fidelity Digital Assets, this decline is largely attributed to the increasing acquisition of Bitcoin by publicly traded companies, a trend fueled by post-election market dynamics.

Exchange reserves have plummeted to approximately 2.6 million BTC, the lowest point since November 2018. This represents a decrease of over 425,000 BTC since November, a clear indicator of long-term investment strategies rather than short-term trading activity.

During the same period, publicly-traded corporations acquired almost 350,000 BTC, according to Fidelity’s findings.

Fidelity Digital Assets, a subsidiary of Fidelity Investments, has been instrumental in the institutional adoption of cryptocurrency. Their recent launch of the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund underscores their commitment to the Bitcoin market. This ETF is among the first eleven spot Bitcoin ETFs approved in the US.

Strategy’s Dominant Role in Corporate Bitcoin Purchases

While Fidelity highlights substantial corporate acquisitions, Strategy, a business intelligence firm that has transformed into a Bitcoin-focused bank, co-founded by Michael Saylor, stands out. They’ve accounted for a significant portion of these purchases.

Since November, Strategy has amassed approximately 285,980 BTC, representing over 81% of the total BTC acquired by publicly listed companies.

Strategy’s latest acquisition, announced April 21st, involved 6,556 BTC.

The trend isn’t confined to the US. Asian companies like Japan’s Metaplanet and Hong Kong’s HK Asia Holdings are also aggressively accumulating Bitcoin.

Metaplanet currently holds 5,000 BTC, with plans to double that amount this year. HK Asia Holdings is aiming to raise funds to boost its Bitcoin reserves.
