Synthetix Founder’s Ultimatum: SNX Stakers Face ‘The Stick’ Over sUSD Depeg

\"Synthetix

The Synthetix protocol is facing a critical challenge: its sUSD stablecoin has depegged, and founder Kain Warwick isn’t pulling any punches. In a recent X post, Warwick issued a stark warning to SNX stakers: participate in the newly launched staking mechanism to restore sUSD’s peg, or face consequences.

Warwick’s message is clear: the newly implemented sUSD staking mechanism, while currently lacking a user-friendly interface, is crucial for resolving the depeg issue. He emphasized that if sufficient participation isn’t achieved once the UI is live, stronger measures will be implemented against sUSD 420 pool stakers. This pool offers incentives of 5 million SNX tokens over a year for stakers who lock their sUSD.

The sUSD 420 Pool, introduced on April 18th, aims to incentivize participation in stabilizing sUSD. Warwick explicitly stated that the responsibility lies with SNX stakers and while a ‘carrot’ approach has been attempted, he isn’t ruling out the use of more forceful methods if the situation doesn’t improve.

\”I think we all know how much I like the stick so if you think you will get away with not eating the carrot I’ve got some bad news for you.\”

The situation underscores the inherent risks associated with crypto-collateralized stablecoins like sUSD, whose stability is directly tied to the underlying asset’s market value (SNX). This isn’t the first time sUSD has experienced volatility; the stablecoin’s price has dipped significantly throughout 2025. This recent depeg highlights the precarious nature of the crypto market and the potential for even established projects to face significant challenges.

Staker Action is Crucial

Warwick’s message highlights the collective responsibility of SNX stakers in restoring sUSD’s stability. He believes that the resources exist to solve the problem; what’s needed is the right incentive structure. While Synthetix is taking a measured approach, the founder’s strong statements leave no doubt about the urgency and seriousness of the situation. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the effectiveness of the new staking mechanism and whether more forceful intervention will be needed.

The broader crypto community will be watching closely to see how this situation unfolds, as it could have significant implications for the future of similar stablecoin designs and the broader decentralized finance landscape. The event underscores the ongoing need for robust risk management and transparency within the DeFi space.
