Tron Overtakes Ethereum: $1 Billion USDT Mint Propels Supply to New Heights

In a significant development in the stablecoin market, Tether has minted another 1 billion USDt tokens on the Tron network. This substantial addition propels Tron’s authorized USDT supply beyond that of Ethereum, marking a pivotal shift in the landscape.

Blockchain data from May 15 clearly shows Tether’s treasury adding $1 billion USDt to the Tron network. As of May 14, Tether’s transparency page indicates Tron held approximately $73.7 billion in authorized USDT, while Ethereum held $74.5 billion. The newly minted tokens solidify Tron’s position at the top, surpassing Ethereum’s authorized supply.

The circulating supply also reflects Tron’s dominance, boasting $73.6 billion USDT compared to Ethereum’s $71.8 billion. This surge in USDT on Tron underscores its growing importance as a stablecoin hub.

Tether’s Strategic USDT Mints

Tether’s CEO, Paolo Ardoino, previously explained that some USDT mints serve to replenish their inventory across various blockchain networks. This proactive approach ensures sufficient supply to meet issuance demands and facilitates smooth chain swaps. It’s a strategic move akin to traditional inventory management, ensuring liquidity and readiness.

This strategic minting indicates Tether anticipates robust future demand for USDt on the Tron network.

The Tron-Ethereum USDT Battle

While Ethereum briefly surpassed Tron in USDT circulation, this recent mint has decisively returned Tron to the leading position. This highlights the ongoing competition between these major networks for stablecoin dominance. Solana and Avalanche follow, holding significantly smaller, though still substantial, amounts of authorized USDT.

CoinGecko data shows Tether’s total circulation at a record high, solidifying its position as a major player in the stablecoin market with a substantial market share.
