USD1: The Meteoric Rise of a Trump-Backed Stablecoin

In a whirlwind two months, USD1, the stablecoin backed by World Liberty Financial (WLFI) and associated with former President Donald Trump, has skyrocketed to become the seventh-largest stablecoin globally. This unprecedented growth has stunned the crypto market, prompting questions about its future and the role of political figures in the crypto space.
WLFI’s recent snapshot vote regarding a USD1 airdrop further fueled its market capitalization climb. Initially launched with a modest $3.5 million supply in early March, USD1 now boasts a market cap exceeding $2.2 billion (at the time of writing), surpassing established competitors like First Digital USD (FDUSD), PayPal USD (PYUSD), and Tether Gold (XAUT), according to CoinGecko data.
While impressive, USD1’s market cap remains significantly smaller than giants like Tether’s USDT ($149 billion) and USDC ($61 billion).
BNB Chain’s Central Role
The overwhelming majority of USD1 (over 99%) is issued on the Binance-backed BNB Chain, with a significantly smaller presence on Ethereum. This concentration raises questions about centralization and potential risks.
A dramatic surge in USD1’s market cap in late April, a 1,540% jump in just two days, further highlights its volatility.
This spike coincided with Eric Trump’s announcement of a $2 billion USD1 investment in Binance by MGX, an Abu Dhabi-based firm, though both Trump and Binance have denied any direct links.
Exchange Listings and International Interest
Several centralized exchanges (CEXs), notably HTX (formerly Huobi), rapidly listed USD1, capitalizing on its growing popularity. However, the majority of trading volume remains on decentralized exchanges (DEXs) like PancakeSwap and Uniswap.
Interestingly, data suggests a significant portion of WLFI investment, and by extension USD1, originates from outside the United States, raising questions about its global adoption and regulatory implications.
USD1’s rapid growth aligns with Trump’s stated pro-stablecoin agenda, yet the lack of transparency regarding its association with Binance remains a critical concern for investors.
